TS Elliot once said that the television enables millions of people to laugh at the same joke at the same time and still be alone in your living room.

Today we have better stations with better programming like History Channel, TLC, A & E, National Geographic. For business CNBC is good. Programs from these stations are worth recording.

This brings us to a scary Halloween time “story”:

Not until I saw last Wednesday (10-15) a part of a History Channel Episode, “Lost Book of Nostradamus,” did I discover how fascinated people are with the 16th-century seer. A number of books have been written and films made about Nostradamus and his prophecies.

According to this “Lost Book of Nostradamus” episode, Nostradamus prophesied Dec. 21, 2012 as the end of the world, which is exactly what scholars believe the pre-Columbian Mayan Calendar indicated, according to another History Channel feature: “Mayan Doomsday Prophecy,” to be aired again on Thursday 10-23-08.

Dec. 21, 2012 is only four year away, right? Now Jesus Christ was supposed to have been born on Zero BC/AD. But a glitch somewhere was discovered and His commonly accepted date of birth is 4 BC or four years early.

What if the scholars and archaeologist missed out a caveat in translating the Mayan Calendar, and forgot to transcribe the words “give or take four years”? This would mean that the end of the world could come as early as Dec. 21, 2008 or as late as Dec. 21, 2016!

Are you scared?

Am I scared? No comment. I am not ready to give my opinion on the Mayan calendar and the 12-21-2012 Doomsday Prophecy or Nostradamus. There is still hope before then for my people in the Philippines to ensure a better future.

What good is it for my people and I that the world did not end but we remain slaves in our own ancestral land as the trashing and degradation of our environment continues?

JE comments: I’ve become rather addicted to the History Channel since I moved to my new digs in Royal Oak, where we now have some really neat stuff, including a behemoth flat-screen TV with satellite service. It is remarkable to note the popularity of doomsday programs–Nostradamus, the Mayan Eschatologies, and even I Ching appear to predict our planet’s demise at the end of 2012. This is all unsettling, and worth more than the simple dismissal that the positivists among us might offer in response. Could it be that we’ll see only one more US presidential election cycle before the game’s over?

As of August 2002 Millennium Challenge Corporation has set aside $5 billion for the Philippines. To this day this fund has yet to be released for lack of viable proposal.

Dec. 11, 2012 – According to this news the U.S. Trade Deficit as of Oct. 2012 is $42.2 BILLION. Whereas the total net worth of Forbes 40 Richest Filipinos as of June 2012 is $47.43 billion. So we need an additional deficit of $5.23 billion to close the ZERO SUM GAME OF GLOBAL FINANCE.This is quite an improvement since before I use to compare the net worth of the 40 Richest Filipinos with the budget deficit of one state only – California. It was always equal, a truly zero sum game.

Pearl Harbor Revisited

It’s a good time to revisit Pearl Harbor on its 71st anniversary of the attack that started America’s official involvement in World War II.

FDR declared the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor “A day that will live in infamy.” Because the Japanese ambassador Nomura delivered the notice breaking off relations with the U.S. after the attack has been carried out.

This angered and roused the American people majority of which were isolationists who did not want to be involved in the war already raging in Europe for over two years. They did not care about the survival of England or the U.S.S.R. (Russia). World War II is the only war the American people unanimously supported.

The Japanese military was demoralized when they found out the attack on Pearl Harbor was launched before war was declared, unlike the wars with Russia (1904) and China (1937). They realized they will be fighting a dishonorable war and therefore it was almost impossible to win.

In the summer of 1939 Russia inflicted a stinging defeat on Japan in a war along the Manchurian-Mongolian border. Russia was looking for payback for their 1905 humiliating defeat. This would influence Japanese militarists’ decision to attack Pearl Harbor.

Up until six months before the Pearl Harbor attack, FDR has been in communication with the Emperor of Japan. When Hitler invaded Russia on June 22, 1941, perhaps inspired by Fascists victory in the Spanish Civil War under Franco, Tojo and the Japanese militarists, decided to cut off the Emperor’s communications with FDR and started preparations for the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Pacific war.

It would have made a big difference if Japan broke off relations with the U.S. and then attack Pearl Harbor. Japanese morale would have been very high because it is an honorable war they are fighting.

As David Krieger of Nuclear Age Peace Foundation would remind us time and again, Japan is still the only country to suffer not one but two nuclear attacks. Prime Minister Tojo and many Japanese officers were tried, convicted and executed as war criminals for waging an aggressive and tenacious war necessitating the use of nuclear bombs.
