Aug. 3, 2019 – In the 2015 WAIS Conference (Oct. 10-11), Martin was supposed to make a presentation about Varian Associates, the pioneer Silicon Valley Company. But he was not able to make the presentation per doctor’s advice. However arrangements were made so that after the conference on Sunday Oct. 11, 2015, I visited and stayed over at his place. The next day after breakfast, he discussed the presentation and I asked him five (5) questions regarding the rise of Silicon Valley.
The email below was sent on Oct. 18, 2015 wherein Martin mentioned that the Nobel prize winners in economics for 2015 were discussing many of the same topics we discussed. Then on Thanksgiving Saturday Nov. 28, 2015, my son Gabriel and I had lunch with Martin Packard and continued our discussion on the Rise of Silicon Valley. Any state, country, investor, educator, industrialist and businessman interested in the replication of the Silicon Valley should listen to Martin Packard. He said he was writing his memoirs I’d like to see his book because I have not written down our discussions.
During lunch, we found out that Varian Associates developed the following big-ticket items:
- The Bar Code
- The GPS (using 26 or so satellites)
- The atomic clock and other equipment used in the Apollo program.
======================
Martin Packard (PhD ’49 Stanford) was supposed to make a presentation in the Oct. 2015 WAIS Conference at Stanford. His presentation was about the rise of Silicon Valley. The doctors advised him to get some rest.
After the conference, I went over to his place and we talked about his paper. I don’t know if the discussion on the contributions Varian, the company he worked for, made in Silicon Valley was part of his presentation.
I asked five (5) questions regarding the rise of Silicon Valley. I look forward to his memoirs, Martin is currently working on that should include his presentation intended for the 2015 WAIS Conference.
